Loudoun County is a central hub in Virginia winemaking, with 27 wineries and counting. Bluemont Vineyard is located in the western reaches of the county, on the eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The winery is situated at an elevation of 951 feet, and the tasting room offers expansive views over rolling, pastoral farm and hunt country. Bluemont produces several wines from traditional French and native American varieties along with wines blended with fresh fruit — including strawberry, peach, and blackberry — harvested from surrounding orchards. During a recent visit we were particularly impressed by Bluemont’s Merlot, which we found to be plump and juicy with a succulent, creamy texture. It abounds with aromas and flavors expressing ripe blueberry and plum, vanilla bean and bell pepper, with hints of black olive and toasty oak. It’s a versatile, easy-going Merlot that’s delicious on its own and will suit just about any dish you may have on the table.
Availability: Bluemont Vineyard wines are available through the winery’s tasting room in Bluemont, Virginia, just over 50 miles northwest of Washington, D.C. In addition to winery tours and tastings, the winery also has a gift/antique shop and facilities suitable for weddings and other private group events.
