SUMMER WINE PICK: Kamiak | Rock Lake Red | Columbia Valley | Washington State | 2009 | $15 | Highly Recommended

Kamiak_RockLakeRed_thumbNow that summer has begun, so has our intrepid search for high quality, reasonably priced, crowd pleasing backyard barbeque wines.  To get us started, here’s a sure bet from Washington State — a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (42%), Merlot (29%), Syrah (24%), and Sangiovese (5%) — that’s fresh, juicy, and easy-going.  The wine bursts with savory aromas and flavors of ripe boysenberries, semi-sweet chocolate, strawberry jam, and a wisp of lavender; all balanced by sweet, toasty oak, smooth tannins, and zippy acidity.  It was aged for 32 months in French and American oak barrels, but the wine is so smooth and velvety on the palate one might never guess it spent that much time in oak.  This is a versatile wine that will pair well with barbeque, burgers on the grill, and just about any summer fare.  We think it’s delicious on its own, as well.  What a great value, too, at $15 the bottle.  We found it at our local Total Wine store; if you don’t have a Total Wine nearby, visit Kamiak virtually at www.kamiakwines.com to learn more about where you might find or order it.  (The Kamiak Rock Lake Red and its sister Kamiak Windust White are produced by Gordon Brothers Cellars.)
