Invetro is a big-value mini-Super Tuscan from the Renieri Estate in Montalcino. Comprised of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot, it is energetic and sinewy, featuring vivid aromas of black cherry, rosemary, and wet stone followed by tangy flavors of cranberry, red grapefruit, and rhubarb, with hints of dried herbs undulating throughout and just a hint of roasted tomato on a persistent finish. The wine is medium-bodied and nimbly structured, with moderate tannins, mouth-watering acidity, and restrained oak (the wine spent just a few months in barrel). It is finely-tuned and eminently enjoyable for the modest price, and is sealed with a novel glass (and reusable) cork. It will pair well with medium to sharp cheeses, tomato-based pasta dishes, and kabobs on the grill. We found Invetro at Total Wine in Alexandria, Virginia, and it is available at many Total Wine locations nationwide (www.totalwine.com).
