PICK of the RACK: Vina Robles | Petite Sirah | Paso Robles | San Luis Obispo County | California | 2010 | $26 | 90 pts

Vina Robles 2Vina Robles founder/proprietor Hans Nef and Managing Partner Hans — R. Michel, both natives of Switzerland, operate their Paso Robles winery according to one essential maxim:  “European Inspiration — California Character.”  The winery’s 2010 Petite Sirah gave us a little taste of how that concept translates into their finished wine.  The wine consists of 78% Petite Sirah from four Vina Robles estate vineyards and 22% Syrah from a fifth estate vineyard, and it strikes a keen balance between ripe dark fruit and lean minerality.  On the nose it offers notes of unsweetened cocoa, cola, and ash followed by flavors of blackberry compote, dried fig, and roasted tomato, with hints of black peppercorn and tart fresh cherry on the savory finish.  The wine is full-bodied and firm, with moderate tannins and acids framed by cedary oak (it aged for 16 months in French oak barrels).  What Vina Robles has achieved here is a Petite Sirah with considerable depth and grace — traits we do not often attribute to this variety in California.  Serve it with sharp cheeses, charcuterie, or grilled meats and vegetables at your next outdoor party.  For more information on Vina Robles, visit them at www.vinarobles.comWe found this wine at Bell Wine & Spirits in downtown Washington, D.C.  Visit Bell virtually at www.bellwineshop.com.
