PICK of the RACK: Martin Ray Winery | Chardonnay | Santa Cruz Mountains AVA | California | 2012 | $25 | 91 pts

Martin Ray ChardRounding out our Chardonnay recommendations for the onset of summer is this graceful rendition of the variety from Martin Ray Winery in Sonoma County. The winemaking team sourced the grapes from two high elevation vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA south of San Francisco. It is at once crisp and nectarous, beaming aromas and flavors of honeysuckle, ripe pear, and hazelnut to the nose and palate. The wine nods to Burgundy in its elegance, restraint, and balance, but California fruit nevertheless shines brightly from the core. Serve it with ripe and medium-sharp cheeses, Trout Amandine, or creamy pasta dishes. Martin Ray produced 357 cases of this wine, and you can learn more about it by visiting them virtually at www.martinraywinery.com. We found it at our local Total Wine location, and it is available at many Total Wine stores nationwide (www.totalwine.com).
