PICK of the RACK: Bodegas Santa Ana | Unánime | Gran Vino Tinto | Mendoza | Argentina | 2009 | $25 | 89 pts

Unanime 3Here’s a robust red for your next outdoor barbeque, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Malbec (25%), and Cabernet Franc (15%) sourced from high-elevation vineyards in San Carlos on the southern end of Mendoza’s Uco Valley.  It’s  full-bodied and fleshy, with aromas of cherry cola, black pepper, and graphite that transition to flavors of dark chocolate-covered blueberries, roasted red pepper, and black licorice, with bursts of peppery oak (it aged for 20 months in French oak) and cola on the finish.  It’s fruit-driven and quite extracted, with moderate tannins and vivid acidity (which speak to its high-elevation roots), and there’s a layer of stony minerality underneath that lends depth.  Serve it with barbeque, for sure, but it would also pair well with medium sharp cheeses, meaty stews, and tomato based dishes.  We found this wine at Total Wine in Alexandria, Virginia, and it is available at many Total Wine stores nationwide (www.totalwine.com)  For more information on Bodegas Santa Ana, visit them virtually at www.bodegas-santa-ana.com.ar .
