EVERYDAY WINE PICK: Langtry Estate | Guenoc | Petite Sirah | Lake County | California | $15 (Avg.) | 88 pts

Guenoc PS 2012This appealing Petite Sirah hails from Lake County, California’s “undiscovered wine country” just north of Napa Valley. It is burly and expressive, with aromas reminiscent of dark fruit compote, cracked black pepper, and pine forest; and flavors that suggest ripe blueberry, cola, and black tea leaf. There are notes of woodsmoke and mineral running throughout, and it all finishes fresh and juicy. The wine is medium-full bodied, with chewy tannins, moderate acids, and cedary oak (it aged 10 months in oak barrels). There is plenty of substance, balance, and sheer drinkability here at a reasonable price. Pair it with sharp cheeses,  grilled meats and vegetables, or teriyaki dishes. Langtry Estate produced 2,042 cases of this wine and distributes it nationally, so inquire with your favorite wine merchant about availability. We found it at our local Total Wine location, and it is available at most Total Wine locations nationwide
