PICK of the RACK: Honig | Cabernet Sauvignon | Napa Valley | California | 2012 | $35 (Avg.) | 91 pts

Honig Cab 12 1Honig Vineyard & Winery, located in Rutherford, Napa Valley — family-owned and operated since 1964 — focuses its production on two varieties that flourish particularly well in the region:  Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is Honig’s most attainable Cabernet, sourced from select neighboring vineyards in and around the valley. (Honig also produces an array of single-vineyard Cabs that are a little harder to find). Full-bodied and expressive, this red offers  aromas of kirsch, cracked peppercorn, and cocoa-dusted almonds, followed by flavors of ripe red currant, dark chocolate-dipped caramel, and sweet cured tobacco — all accented by sinewy dried herb and peppery oak notes and framed by silky tannins and sprightly acids. Aged for a year and a half in American oak barrels (35% new), it is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (89%) supplemented with doses of Petit Verdot (7%) and Cabernet Franc (4%) that lend dimension. All the hallmarks of Napa Valley Cabernet are nestled in their right place here, and it is admirably approachable in youth. If you are searching for a fine Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon that is ready to enjoy right out of the gate, this just may be the one.
